Article 18 prohibits the state from giving titles to anyone, except for academic or military distinctions.
It also prohibits Indian citizens from accepting titles from foreign states.
Article 18 of the Indian Constitution
- Article 18(1): The state cannot give titles, other than military or academic distinctions
- Article 18(2): Indian citizens cannot accept titles from foreign states
- Article 18(3): Non-citizens who hold a state office of profit or trust cannot accept titles from foreign states without the President’s consent
Purpose of Article 18
The purpose of Article 18 is to abolish titles of nobility and aristocratic titles that were given by the British.
